Our committment to sustainability

We like to describe ourselves as small but mighty – and we believe that applies to our potential impact on the environment as well as our publishing power. That’s why we’re committed to operating in a sustainable way. Here’s a bit more about how we do that.

UK-based printing and distribution

Moving stock around is the main contributor to the carbon footprint of any publishing house. That’s why all our books are printed, stored, and distributed by UK suppliers, keeping the need for transportation to a minimum.

FSC Mix Certified paper stock

The paper used to print our books is all FSC Mix Certified, as are the printers we use. You can view their sustainability certification here.

FSC is a global, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. It ensures that products with the FSC label uphold principles and criteria which bring the highest social and environmental benefits.

FSC certification can positively impact workers and communities, shift governance processes globally and change economic and environmental conditions in the forest. This impact improves conditions such as conflict over land tenure and use, worker’s health and safety, biodiversity conservation, protection of endangered species and participatory forest policy.

Stock management

Over the past two years we have worked extremely hard to optimise our printing strategy to minimise pulping (what happens to books when they don’t sell out). We have worked with our printers to ensure that we can respond to market demand in a quick and agile fashion, which allows us to be conservative with our print runs and hugely reduce the risk of waste. On the rare occasion that we do have excess stock, we first look to donate these books to charity, and – if that’s not possible – ensure that we pulp in a responsible manner which allows the waste materials to be fully recycled.
